THE DISPERSAL HUT – OBSERVING AT IWM DUXFORD

RAF Dodwick is a small airfield that is part of group 12, under the control of Sir Trafford Leigh Mallory.

It is mainly a small satellite maintenance & refilling station, but is also the Dispersal of 693 Squadron , call sign ‘Scarlet’, a squadron that operates in the Midlands and East Anglia area.

The airfield was created in 1934 as a small repair airfield but has been repurposed and added to since 1938, finally coming online in 1939 to join Group12.

693 Squadron  were formed in 1939 so is a relatively new squadron however the men have served various RAF careers.

693 Squadron have “A” and “B” Flights as well as full ground crew. Because of its vulnerable location in the East Anglian Fens, Dodwick Airfield has its own small Station Police section (SP) based at the airfield.

693 ‘Scarlet’ Squadron

“A” Flight ( Blue and Green section) have already been scrambled and are acting as back up in an offensive against the Luftwaffe, “Luftflotte 5” .

On our display you will find Red Section of B Flight, who along with Yellow section) are on ‘30 mins availability’, waiting to be ‘raised to readiness’.

***************************************************

In reality there was no RAF Dodwick nor was there a 693 Squadron, we thought it more respectful to represent a generic 1940 Dispersal rather than a real airfield with a real squadron, so’s not to offend or pretend to be anyone from this tense and dramatic period in our history.

In memory of ‘The Few’

We all had Grandfathers that served in the RAF

during the conflict in various roles, they are always with us, their names form part of the 693 Squadron .
